The Story Behind HawaiiansAbroad.com

In April 2001, I embarked on a personal project regarding Hawaiians living abroad. This was done because I've read statistics that about 10 years ago that as much as 1/3 of Native Hawaiians live outside of Hawai'i, predominantly in the continental US. About two years ago, I was told that number has increased to about 1/2 of Native Hawaiians. However, I could never find more than statistics, no stories, no interviews, nothing. I thought it was very interesting that people who love Hawai'i so much would leave it. I mean how could a possible 50% of Native Hawaiians be leaving their homelands? I know that Hawaiians don't get together to discuss plans to leave in big groups,... but unfortunately it's happening, and our people are leaving.
I sent e-mails to the Kanakamaoliallies and Hawaii-Nation online discussion groups, requesting responses from Hawaiians living outside of Hawai'i. In the e-mail, I asked four questions.
*1.) Why did you leave Hawai'i?
*2.) What changes and differences have you experienced since leaving?
*3) If you were able to choose where to live, between Hawai'i and the place you're currently living at now, which would you choose and why?
*4) If you would prefer to live in Hawai'i, why is it that you're not currently living there now?
I also encouraged people to share any experiences they felt writing about.
If you would like to share your experience(s), please answer the above questions and mail them to HawaiiansAbroad@worldcrossing.com

The Online Discussion Group

Several months after sending out those four questions, I decided to create an online discussion group for the people who responded and anyone else interested. Unfortunately, fewer people have subscribed to the discussion group than the number of people who responded to the four question survey. We have great group members and have had a few discussions on different Hawaiian issues and some of the members have shared some great information. I encourage you to join our discussion group by clicking on or visiting www.groups.aol.com/hawaiiansabroad. By joining, you are not obligated to post anything, but you will receive e-mails on current Hawaiian issues as well as updates to the website. E hele mai!
